   Scanning text documents for editing (OCR)

Scanning photographs or other images

  • Place the document you would like scanned face down on the scanner.
  • Press the HP Scanning Software button on the front of the scanner. This will bring up the scanning software on the screen.
  • Click New Scan
  • To crop the image to desired size select the area you wish to crop using the mouse.
  • Resize the area by using the resizing handles located around the border of the selected image.
  • Save image by clicking Save As.
  • Select a file type. The most popular image types are Bitmap (.bmp), GIF (.gif) and JPEG (.jpg).
  • Enter an image name, choose location to save and click Save.

Scanning text documents for editing (OCR)

  1. Place the document you would like scanned face down on the scanner.
  2. Press the HP Scanning Software button on the front of the scanner. This will bring up the scanning software on the screen.
  3. Click New Scan .
  4. Select Editable Text (OCR) as output type
  5. To crop the document to desired size select the area you wish to crop using the mouse.
  6. Now you can either:
    1. Save image by clicking Save As. And select a file type: text (.txt) or HTML (.htm).
    2. Choose Scanning to and select Word to scan directly into Microsoft Word for editing.
Please note that OCR technology is not an exact science yet and editing the document for unrecognized characters may be necessary. Also the quality of the scan depends on the quality of the original.

Scanning negatives, slides and transparencies

  1. Check out the hpscanjet XPA tools for negatives and slides from the Information Commons Desk .
  2. Place HP XPA tool on scanner bed.
  3. Press the HP Scanning Software button on the front of the scanner. This will bring up the scanning software on the screen.
  4. If Scanning slides:

    1. Choose Scan/XPA Slides from Menu
    2. Place slides module on xpa frame tool and slides on open slots.
    3. Cover unused slide slots with slide covers.

    If Scanning negatives:

    1. Choose Scan/XPA Negatives from Menu
    2. Place negatives on negative tool.
    3. Place negative tool on XPA frame tool.

    If scanning transparencies:

    1. Choose Scan/XPA Slides from Menu.

    2. Place transparency on XPA frame tool.

  5. Place Transparency/Slide adapter on XPA frame tool
  6. Click New Scan
  7. To crop the image to desired size select the area you wish to crop using the mouse.
  8. Resize the area by using the resizing handles located around the border of the selected image.
  9. Save image by clicking Save As.
  10. Select a file type.
  11. Enter an image name, choose location to save and click Save.
